Job Title: Teacher Mentor/Coach

FLSA Status: School Year Full-Time Non-Exempt                             Job Points: 7

Reports to:  Education Specialist/ Center Director                           Revision Date: August 2017

                                                                                                                            

 

Position Summary: This position serves as Mentor Teacher for a Head Start program.  This position is chiefly responsible for supporting educational quality, Core Knowledge Curriculum implementation and positive child outcomes throughout the program, and performs other tasks as needed.  The Mentor Teacher works closely with the Director of Early Childhood Development and Curriculum & Environments Specialist, collaborates with Center Managers, teachers, and other staff in the Head Start program to ensure that outcomes are achieved for children of all abilities. 

 

Typical Physical Demands: Physical stamina is required to tolerate standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling, walking, bending, and lifting objects weighing up to 50lbs.  Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.  Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.  

 

Typical Working Conditions:  Position is concentrated in a school classroom setting.   Requires automobile travel to various centers, home evaluations, training, seminars and workshops. 

 

Job Segments:

The Mentor Teacher will need to perform the following responsibilities to achieve the key outcomes listed above:

Support For Educational Quality & Positive Child Outcomes

  1. Conduct regular classroom observations in each center, both informally and formally (utilizing our program systems and tools).
  2. Provide feedback to Teachers and Center Directors in all areas of educational quality, including but not limited to:
    1. Classroom environment and materials
    2. Daily structure and routines
    3. Positive guidance, classroom management, dealing with challenging behavior
    4. Planning curriculum that is engaging, meaningful, developmentally appropriate, individualized and outcome-focused
    5. Interaction strategies to support children's language, cognitive and social development
    6. Support for English Language Learners
    7. Early literacy and mathematics learning
  3. Work with Center Directors to create and maintain quality improvement plans; identify and procure resources to support Center Directors in successfully executing quality improvement.
  4. Coach and support Center Directors to serve as the education lead for their buildings.
  5. Monitor implementation and quality of curriculum and assessment, including:
    1. Review of lesson plans
    2. Child observations and accuracy of analysis in Core Knowledge
    3. Student assessment and quality of evidence
    4. Work Sampling outcomes
  6. Model best practices for Teachers
  7. Assist Center Directors and Teachers in understanding child outcomes data and using it to plan and individualize.
  8. Along with Data Management Manager, track child outcomes and program quality assessment results on a center- and program-wide basis, analyze data and make program development recommendations to Head Start Director.
  9. Work with Education Specialist to develop, conduct or arrange training as needed, including professional development days, ongoing training, center- or team-specific training, and additional related training for parents, volunteers, or others. 
  10. Support implementation of pilots and special initiatives related to curriculum, assessment, teacher training or other.
  11. Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty,                     Respect, and Responsibility.
  12. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Communication and Service Coordination 
    1. Participate in team and 1-1 meetings, regularly scheduled and as needed, to ensure coordination of education services across Head Start program. Participate in management meetings as requested.
    2. Communicate effectively in written or verbal format to groups of all sizes and individuals.
    3. Actively participate in Head Start community, including staff meetings, mandated trainings, committee meetings, and other program-wide functions as needed, including some evening activities.
  2. Record Keeping and Recording
    1. Maintain documentation of monitoring, coaching and training activities, adhering to our program's existing systems (Master Binders, Core Knowledge, CLASS, ECERS.) whenever applicable.
    2. Complete monthly reports on area activities and progress toward goals with recommended modifications to plans, submit to Head Start Director the last Friday of each month.
  3. Human Resources
    1. Know the personnel policies and procedures.
    2. Devise work methods and procedures that support improvements in existing work practices; supporting the Head Start Director, Center Directors, Teachers and Assistant Teachers.
    3. Plan and adjust work operations to meet changing or emergent program requirements within available resources and with minimum sacrifice to quantity or quality of work.
  4. Program Governance and Leadership
    1. Lead for the good of the entire organization, understand the big picture and use it as framework to make decisions
    2. Make decisions that support program quality and maintain program accountability.
    3. Work with the Head Start Director and Education Specialist to develop and maintain focus for education service area, align education goals with the strategic direction and needs of the program, and ensure that all education staff understand how their work relates to the program as a whole and the relevant regulations and Performance Standards.
    4. Improve quality and effectiveness of education service area and overall organization by initiating, sponsoring and implementing organizational change and by helping others to successfully manage organizational change.
    5. Promote consistent exchange of information and a cooperative environment within the center director team and other leadership.
    6. Attend parent committees, Policy Council and board of director meetings as needed or requested.

 Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
  • Previous experience teaching and/or supervising in a Head Start setting, Core Knowledge Curriculum
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills with the ability to effectively manage
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software, to include Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing using correct English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Position requires a clear criminal background check to include an MVR (Motor Vehicle Report). 
  • Requires the completion and acceptable results of a physical examination and TB screening per the rules and regulations of the Head Start Program.
