Job Title: Substitute Teacher

FLSA Status: School Year Part Time Non-Exempt                             Job Grade: 1 $8-$9

Reports to:  Center Director                                                            Revision Date: September 2017

                                                                                                                            

 

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Center Director, Teacher or Teacher Assistant the incumbent is responsible for providing assistance in the establishment, maintenance, and management of classroom activities and providing those services necessary to meet the requirements of the Head Start Performance Standards.  This position is on an as needed basis. 

Supervision Exercised: N/A

Typical Physical Demands: Physical stamina is required to tolerate standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling, walking, bending, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs.  Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.  Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions

 

Typical Working Conditions:  Position is mainly in a classroom.

 

Job Segments:

  1. Fills in for Teacher or Teacher Assistant on an as needed basis.
  2. Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  3. Assists in implementing daily lesson plans and daily schedules.
  4. Assists in organizing and maintaining learning centers within the classroom.
  5. Maintains order by using positive approaches to behavior management.
  6. Refers children with suspected problems to Teacher.
  7. Is alert, awake and attentive in the classroom to monitor and ensure the safety of the children. Maintains proper Teacher:Children ratio.
  8. Attends meetings and workshops as required.
  9. Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  10. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Requirements:

 

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One to three years' experience working with preschool-aged children preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing using correct English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Position requires a clear criminal background check.
  • Requires the completion and acceptable results of a physical examination and TB screening per the rules and regulations of the Head Start Program.
