Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. The Camp Counselor is to provide a quality experience to children and parents while focusing on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith.

Typical Physical Demands:       

Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.


Typical Working Conditions: 

Position is in wellness environment and outdoors. May require automobile travel to branches, training, seminars or workshops. Bending, stooping, lifting up to 50 lbs., verbal communication, hearing, seeing, some sitting.


  1. Supervises a group of children.
  2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  3. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.
  4. Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  6. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  7. Enjoy working with children and passionate about creating a great camp experience.
  8. Ensure the safety of all campers in cabins, evening programs and various department settings.
  9. Volunteer to give speeches, lead songs and skits, teach an activity, or make a difference in a camper's Camp Lakeside experience.
  10. Ensure that all equipment is safe and working properly each and every time that it is used.
  11. Be prepared to provide alternative programming activity in times of inclement weather.
  12. Ensure that you are skilled and able in whichever department that you have been assigned.
  13. Successfully balance responsibilities in department with those required in cabin and throughout camp.
  14. Report any detrimental incidents to the Camp Director and Program Director.
  15. Notify the Camp Director when equipment must be purchased or repaired.
  16. Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.
  17. Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility
  18. Actively participates and supports the annual scholarship campaign
  19. Performs all other duties as assigned

  1. At least 18 years of age
  2. High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  3. Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting
  4. Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  5. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 60 days of hire date.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
