Job Title: Teacher for Barnwell County

FLSA Status: School Year Full-Time Non-Exempt                             Job Points: 7

Position Summary: Under the direction of the Head Start Director and Center Director the incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing a full day preschool classroom curriculum that will provide children and families with comprehensive quality services that meets Head Start, Federal and State standards.

Supervision Exercised: Assistant Teacher, Substitute(s) (as needed)

Typical Physical Demands: Physical stamina is required to tolerate standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling, walking, bending, and lifting objects weighing up to 50lbs.  Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.  Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.  


Typical Working Conditions:  Position is concentrated in a school classroom setting.   Requires automobile travel to various centers, home evaluations, training, seminars and workshops. 


Job Segments:

  1. Is alert, awake and attentive in the classroom to monitor and ensure the safety of the children. Maintains proper Teacher to Children ratio at all times.
  2. Maintain a clean, safe, orderly, and stimulating developmentally and age appropriate environment that promotes learning and meets children's individual needs and interests which ensures children meet educational outcomes.
  3. Ensure classroom complies with licensing standards and regulations.
  4. Participates in parent teacher conferences, home visits, and required center-level meetings. Conduct home visits and parent-teacher conferences in the family's preferred language, or through an interpreter, to the extent possible.
  5. Attends and participates in mandated administrative staff meetings, training and community activities. Attends national, regional, state, and local meetings/conferences related to Head Start as required.
  6. Completes program assessments and evaluations of activities for children and program services meeting all due dates.
  7. Track attendance, meal count, volunteer hours, in-kind contributions, child sign-in and sign-out sheets, health checks, child portfolios, assessments, and other information as necessary.
  8. Maintain required training hours for licensing and job employment within the school employment year.
  9. Handle emergency situations as designed by program policies and procedures.
  10. Develop, coordinate, plan, prepare, and implement daily classroom group and individualize activities for children to ensure that goals of children are met (i.e. weekly lesson plans).
  11. Work with Education Specialist and Child Development and Health Services in coordinating and implementing activities and services for children and families (field trips, health and medical visits, and others as they arise).
  12. Create welcoming program environments that incorporate the unique cultural, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds of families in the program and community.
  13. Conduct observations, and make necessary referrals to the appropriate service area through Head Start Leadership.
  14. Provides appropriate care for children with disabilities and attend IEP meetings as requested.
  15. Ensure that children are involved in personal hygiene, health, and safety experiences daily (i.e. tooth brushing, toileting, hand washing).
  16. Eat and converse with children during mealtime and encourage them in the development of good eating habits and social skills.
  17. Recognize parents as their children's primary teachers and nurturers.
  18. Implement intentional strategies to engage parents in their children's learning and development and support parent-child relationships, including specific strategies for father engagement, Language and Dual language development and Literacy and Bi-literacy development.
  19. Develop relationships with parents, encourage trust and respect, and encourage ongoing two-way communication.
  20. Work with families to create a family partnership process that identifies needs, interests, strengths, goals, services and resources.
  21. Provide parents with opportunities to participate in the program as employees or volunteers
  22. Ensure families are provided the opportunity to share personal information in an environment in which they feel safe.
  23. Provide parents with information about the importance of their child's regular attendance, and partner with them, as necessary, to promote consistent attendance.
  24. At a minimum, must offer opportunities for parents to participate in a research-based parenting curriculum that builds on parents' knowledge and offers parents the opportunity to practice parenting skills to promote children's learning and development.
  25. Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  26. Performs all other duties as assigned.





  • At least a Bachelor's in early childhood education, child development,or otherwise meet the requirements of section 648A(a)(3)(B) of the Act.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of early childhood and/or family support educational services programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills with the ability to effectively manage
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software, to include Microsoft Office Suite of products.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing using correct English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Position requires a clear criminal background check to include an MVR (Motor Vehicle Report). 
  • Requires the completion and acceptable results of a physical examination and TB screening per the rules and regulations of the Head Start Program.
