This is a seasonal position beginning May 2018 and ending August 2018.



This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Day Camp Counselor creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while guiding campers throughout their experience and creating a learning environment for campers in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. The Day Camp Lead Counselor is responsible for guiding seven to twelve campers throughout their camp experience, and create a learning environment for campers that teaches the core values of respect, honesty, responsibility, and caring. Day Camp Lead Counselors are responsible for supervising Day Camp Assistant Counselors, providing direction and support.

  • Assume responsibility for camper check-in and check-out at your assigned pick-up and drop-off location
  • Assume responsibility for safe transportation of campers to and from Camp Lakeside via YMCA bus each day
  • Assume responsibility for leadership and guidance over assistant counselor(s) and to campers in daily living, with special attention to: personal hygiene and safety, camper participation in all-camp activities.
  • Assume responsibility as activity specialist, including developing and facilitating curriculum in assigned activity area
  • Assume responsibility for interpreting the rules, policies, and traditions of the camp to the camper
  • Serve as supervisor and mentor to Assistant Counselor under his/her supervision, and act as a good role model in personal language, appearance, communication skills, and health habits. Sit down for bi-weekly performance reviews with Assistant Counselor, to evaluate their performance.
  • Assume responsibility for health/welfare of campers entrusted to his/her charge
  • Communicate verbally with campers individually each day
  • Accompany the campers to any of the camp activities
  • Communicate verbally with campers, and provide instructions
  • Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting and the auditory ability to respond appropriately to those hazards
  • Follow all camp rules and guidelines as indicated in Code of Conduct
  • Observe camper behavior in daily camp life, to respond to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with the improper behavior

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Upon hire, completion of YMCA provided First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) season experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records and organize program area logistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
