Job Title: Chef, Child Development Center

General Statement of Duties: Responsible for the daily operations of the kitchen and all meals for the Child Development Center. Specific areas include but are not limited to: budget; purchasing and inventory; State Health regulations and Child Care Licensing requirements for kitchens; State funded food programs and Georgia Pre-K contracts; building maintenance; customer service; administration of policies and procedures, and development and promotion of programs and center ensuring the successful business operation and quality of center.

Status: Part time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Salary Range: $8.50-9.50

Supervision Exercised: None

Typical Physical Demands: Standing for extended periods of time. Full range of body motion to include: manual and finger dexterity; eye-hand coordination necessary to perform record management; ability to bend and lift 30-50 pounds on a routine basis; and ability to escort children into or out of the building during an emergency. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range and ability to read, write, and orally communicate in the English language.

Typical Working Conditions: Kitchen, pantry, and office environments.

Job Segments:

  • Responsible for all of the day-to-day operations of center kitchen
  • Develops menu's in accordance with state nutrition guidelines
  • Ensures kitchen and pantry areas are cleaned daily and trash is taken out
  • Maintain accurate records, and files timely reports with the Center Director, agencies and associations as required (i.e.; equipment/food inventories; CACFP reports; GA Pre-K reports and grants; etc.)
  • Secure yearly USDA Food program, as well as yearly food service contract and report accordingly
  • Purchasing and Inventory controls in place: organize inventory of supplies/food and requests items as needed to ensure smooth operations within the center
  • Assist with center kitchen equipment, ensuring repairs are done in a timely manner
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies in kitchen and storage areas.
  • Ensures agreements between The Family Y and the Augusta Housing Authority are followed and usage of equipment, facility, and vehicles are for the soul purposes of the child care center
  • Maintains a cooperative working relationship with all staff and volunteers
  • Attends child care staff and meetings/training as required
  • Certified and current at all times in CPR, First Aid, and Fire Safety
  • Successfully complete 12+ hours of DHR training annually
  • Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • Actively participates and supports both the Y Annual and the United Way campaigns.
  • Actively participates and supports Y events held throughout the year.

Performance Requirements: Pass State of Georgia criminal history & background check; obtain 12 hours DHR approved child care training annually; certified in CPR, First Aid; ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently; proficient in supervision, effective time management skills and problem solving, with the ability to lead and be an active team player; organize and deliver complex inventory to diverse settings in a timely manner within budget guidelines; proficient at organizing, detail oriented, have follow-through-focus; and excellent communication skills.


  • Must be at least 21 years or older
  • A minimum 3 to 5 years food preparation/management experience
  • Associates Degree or higher in related field
